Professional Negligence Glossary of Terms

Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC)

A consultant that provides guidance and assistance to someone wishing to work, study or live in Canada. Once a person has entered the country, an RCIC can advise them and provide representation in a variety of immigration-related applications, including citizenship, family sponsorship, detention reviews, and visitor visas. Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants are regulated by the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC).

Regulated International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA)

An international student advisor regulated by the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC). RISIAs provide guidance to international students and their dependents on study permits and temporary resident visas. Unlike Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants (RCICs), Regulated International Student Immigration Advisors cannot represent an applicant in their immigration or citizenship hearing, nor can they complete immigration forms on their behalf.

Unauthorized Practitioner (UAP)

An unauthorized practitioner (UAP) is a person providing unregulated immigration services without proper authorization from the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC). The College has legal powers to stop or limit UAP activities and prevent potential immigrants from victimization.
